Lafayette Instrument Company seeks an individual for the position of Mechanical Engineer. Lafayette Instrument Company is a product innovation company that designs, develops and manufactures instrumentation for the investigation, study and assessment of biological and behavioral processes. These products have been sold worldwide to universities, physicians, law enforcement agencies, governments, private practitioners, and corporations. The individual will be responsible for the design of mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, new product development and the maintenance and documentation of current designs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Research, plan, design, prototype and build mechanical and electromechanical products and systems using established engineering principles and manufacturing practices.
  • Learn and apply new or emerging technologies and design principles.
  • Research design specifications and proposals to determine the feasibility of designs or applications.
  • Analyze mechanical drawings, specifications, proposals, and other documentation to prepare time, cost, and labor estimates for products, projects, or services.
  • Determine material and labor requirements and prepare itemized cost estimates.
  • Direct fabrication, assembly, installation and repair processes to ensure products and systems conform to specifications.
  • Develop methods for testing products or systems.
  • Maintain product specifications, drawings, instructions, material lists and engineering changes.
  • Consult with clients, vendors, manufacturing personnel and other engineers to discuss and formulate design criteria and resolve issues.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Engineering Manager.

Mechanical Engineer Qualifications

  • Four year degree in Mechanical Engineering or Mechanical Engineering Technology or equivalent experience in product design and support.
  • Experience with Computer Aided Design and Parametric 3-D modeling. Experience with SolidWorks is preferred.
  • Experience in designing mechanical products and systems for manufacture.
  • Ability in strength and fatigue analysis is preferred.
  • Ability in injection molded part design is preferred.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems, establish priorities, and multi-task across concurrent projects.
  • Ability to read, develop, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical information including technical drawings, mechanical prints, work instructions and procedures.
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, vendors and sales personnel.
  • Ability to effectively communicate information to management, customers, and sales personnel.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of product and project objectives.
